The World Green Economy Organization (WGEO) is a global institution dedicated to accelerating the transition to a green, low-carbon, climate-resilient and resource-efficient economy. Formally launched in response to the outcomes of the Rio+20 Conference (2012) and subsequent international commitments, WGEO supports sustainable development, poverty eradication and inclusive growth through its programmes and partnerships.
WGEO brings together governments, the private sector, academia, civil society and development partners to link finance, technology, and capacity-building for the green economy. It acts as a multi-stakeholder platform with an institutional structure comprising an Assembly, a Council and a Secretariat.
The organization operates via thematic programmes including:
Advocacy and outreach for the green economy
Promoting green investment opportunities
Enabling policy, legislative and resource frameworks
Capacity development and innovation transfer
WGEO plays a key role in shaping global coordination and action around the green transition. For example, during COP28 held in Dubai, WGEO announced that 86 countries had joined its flagship initiative, the Global Alliance on Green Economy (GAGE) — a major milestone for multilateral cooperation in climate and green growth.
By convening high-level summits, publishing green economy reports (e.g., “Green Jobs: Creating and Sustaining Prosperity in a Changing Global Economy”), and fostering matchmaking between project developers and investors, WGEO helps turn green ambition into practical outcomes.
Global Alliance on Green Economy (GAGE) – A platform launched by WGEO and the UAE Government to support countries in their green transitions through technical & financial assistance, knowledge sharing and project match-making.
World Green Economy Summit (WGES) – Annual summit held in Dubai that brings together ministers, industry leaders, innovators and financiers to advance the green economy agenda.
Publications & Reports – High-quality research outputs (e.g., the “World Green Economy Report”) offering guidance on policy, business models, finance and green jobs.
Capacity building & project facilitation – Support to developing countries, green-investment matchmaking, technology transfer and enabling frameworks.
Governments and policy-makers seeking to design or refine green-economy strategies and access global support.
Investors, financiers and project-developers targeting clean-energy, sustainable-infrastructure and green-growth opportunities.
Businesses, startups and innovation hubs offering green technologies, circular-economy solutions or climate-resilient services.
NGOs, academic institutions and training centres working on sustainable development, green jobs or climate-policy capacity.
As the world grapples with climate change, resource constraints, and the need for equitable development, WGEO’s mission becomes ever more relevant. It is helping to bridge the gap between high-level commitments (e.g., Paris Agreement, UN SDGs) and actionable projects on the ground, particularly in emerging and developing economies. By promoting inclusive growth, green investments and global cooperation, WGEO contributes to shaping a future in which economic development and environmental sustainability go hand-in-hand.
